I got my first rejection letter today. It was personal, not a form letter, and it was very nicely written. The story just wasn’t what the publication was looking for, and they mentioned that the characters came off as one dimensional. They’re quite correct – the story is a surreal fairy tale, so I didn’t flesh out the characters, and the whole premise is fairly based around the idea that you don’t know who these people actually are.
They also took exception to the ending, the twist discovery at the end. I admit it’s a bit cliche, but again, working within the setting of a fairy tale, what isn’t cliche?
Anyway, I may submit to them again in a month or so, something more seasoned, though they don’t seem to follow my particular brand of horror. Oh well, can’t win them all, huh folks?
