I09.com has a report from Deadline that the recent issues with the Dark Tower project, Ron Howard’s adaptation of the Stephen King masterpiece series into both movies and a tie-in television series, were mostly due to Howard’s attempt to fast track some of the shooting for weather concerns. However, he’s still committed to the project and is pushing it full steam ahead.
Javier Bardem is still the go-to choice for Roland, but he’s not yet committed to the project. Ron Howard has said he’s the actor he’d most like in the role, and Bardem wants to play the role if scheduling works out. He’s definitely got a Roland look to him. There have been some minor budget cuts, but co-producer Brian Grazer said they won’t likely cause any trouble, and script writer Akiva Goldsman is working around the budget constraints.
Howard confirmed that the idea is to use the TV series to really flesh out the world. He said that while they could have packed everything into three movies, you’d lose a lot of the flavor of the Tower series, and with the companion TV series, they can really explore the world that King created.
