Slender Man revealed! He’s David Cronenberg!

No, not really, though if David Cronenberg WERE Slender Man, that would be awesome.

No, what I’m referring to is Cronenberg’s portrayal of Decker, the insane doctor in Clive Barker’s Nightbreed.  As you can see below, Decker, in his guise as “button-head”, bears an uncanny resemblance to everyone’s favorite internet legend:

Notice the eyes - the cross pattern like the Engineer symbol

Nightbreed came out in 1990, and is based on Barker’s novella, Cabal.  The movie, if you haven’t seen it, is pretty good, but you can tell a lot of it was cut out.  Unfortunately, a restored “director’s cut” isn’t likely to see the light of day anytime soon.  You’d do better to wish for a re-make.

In any event, it’s possible that Decker served as the initial inspiration for Slender Man, perhaps only subliminally, when Slendy was first birthed on Something Awful so many years ago.  The blank face and dark eyes fits well, mixing as it does with the classic Men In Black facelessness.  Also, it’s David Cronenberg, who is one of the greatest horror directors ever, and was a damned fine actor in this movie.

Need more convincing?  Check out this image from the movie:

Tell me that doesn’t scream Slender Man.  Oddly enough, Decker’s final fate in the movie fits with Slendy too.  He gets his wish, sort of, and the Nightbreed are scattered from their home.  But in return, he becomes one of them, forever trapped in his faceless mask.
